A Year in Industry at Energy PR
What are you studying at university?
Marketing, Advertising and Branding at the University of Gloucestershire.
Why did you choose to do a year in industry?
Marketing is such a broad sector, and there are so many career paths I could take after graduation. At the halfway point in my degree, I still had no idea what I might like to do after graduation. So, the chance to complete a year in industry and experience day-to-day life in a PR agency seemed like a no-brainer to support me in deciding what path to take.
Some students are reluctant to take a year out because it can feel like delaying university and graduation. But only being 21, I didn’t feel in a rush to finish my degree and I wanted to get as much out of my degree as possible. I also felt like spending a year in industry would allow me to apply all my learnings so far to real-life scenarios and expand my knowledge.
What’s been the most interesting thing you’ve learnt during your time at Energy PR?
I’ve learnt so much, I don’t even know where to begin! Firstly, I didn’t have much understanding of PR before I joined Energy, but that quickly changed as I started to support on a range of client accounts.
I think the most interesting thing I’ve learnt is about writing, specifically how to write for different audiences and different purposes on a wide range of subjects that I’m not necessarily an expert in. It’s been quite fascinating. It’s also been useful to see how the working environment works.
What would be your advice to other people starting their career in PR?
I would simply say to get as much experience as possible!
