Why did you choose Energy? What’s the most valuable thing you’ve learnt so far? What are you hoping to achieve at Energy? What would be your advice to other people considering a career in PR?

We recently spoke to our very own Bethany Schild about first few months at Energy. Here she shares why she chose the agency, what she’s learnt so far and her advice for anyone considering a career in PR!

Why did you choose Energy?

Having studied both Psychology and Film and TV at the University of Birmingham, I was unsure of what I wanted to do afterwards. I managed to find work on a couple of TV shows and a low-budget film but realised I wanted a career that allowed me to exercise my creativity while also offering stability. It turns out PR does just that.

I came across PR as a potential career path and researched further by completing a short course introduction to confirm my curiosity. When I felt more confident that PR seemed like a good fit for me, I searched for PR agencies rather than in-house roles as my interests were quite broad.

While scrolling through TikTok, I saw a video from the Energy account showing what it’s like to work at a PR agency. I then stalked the rest of Energy’s socials and website and liked what I saw! The company and culture values, team vibes, array of clients, and focus on sustainability and doing good in the world aligned with my own values and aspirations. I reached out to Louise via email and it all worked out from there. I now manage the team’s TikTok account, so it’s a real full-circle moment.

What’s the most valuable thing you’ve learnt so far?

I would have to say re-establishing my self-confidence since joining Energy.

I had a couple of challenging years post-university finding my feet, so being surrounded and supported by such a compassionate, funny and inspiring team has really lifted me up and allowed me to believe in myself and my skills again.

I’ve also learnt how to pick up the phone and pitch to journalists. I actually won the ‘Perfect Pitcher’ award at our Christmas party which meant a lot, especially as I found it uncomfortable speaking on the phone in a professional capacity when I first joined the agency!

What are you hoping to achieve at Energy?

During my time at Energy, I hope to hone my creativity skills by continuing to contribute to client brainstorms and campaign ideas, and to become more involved in decision-making processes.

From social media posts to features and blogs, I would like to develop my PR writing styles and become confident writing for a broad range of audiences.

I’m also aiming to embrace Energy’s Growth value. Being curious, collaborating with my team, and having an optimistic outlook on my work will hopefully help me become the best possible PR consultant I can be.

What would be your advice to other people considering a career in PR?

The number one piece of advice I’d give to someone at the start of their PR career is to find out as much as you can about the industry before applying to a role.

This could be taking part in a short introduction course, reaching out to people in the industry on LinkedIn, or searching for agencies’ social media accounts to gain an idea of what it’s like to work in PR!
